    MIDLANDS!

JAY IVANCO 6TH AT MIDLANDS OPEN Clarion Finishes 27th of 42 Jay Ivanco - 6th at Midlands Dec. 30, 2008 (Evanston, Ill.): Clarion University's Jay Ivanco (So. Monroeville/Gateway) finished in sixth place at 125-pounds at the 46th Annual Midlands Wrestling Open which concluded on Tuesday evening. Held at the Welsh-Ryan Arena, Ivanco finished the tournament with a 3-3 overall record, wrestling 4 nationally ranked wrestlers in his six matches. On Tuesday in the semifinals, Ivanco lost to Iowa State's #5 ranked Tyler Clark by a 10-4 score. In the wrestle backs, Jay went against #4 ranked James Nicholson (Old Dominion) and lost in the final seconds 3-1. Tied 1-1 late in the third, Ivanco had a clean takedown shot and tried to work it for a takedown. Nicholson countered and scored the winning takedown with only two seconds remaining. In the match for 5th place Ivanco wrestled Ben Ashmore, who was nationally ranked last year at Oklahoma State, but has transferred to Arizona State and was wrestling unattached. With Ivanco leading again late in the third 1-0, Ivanco had rolled up 45-seconds riding time and was trying to ride Ashmore out for victory. He was reversed with 25-seconds left and lost 2-1. "I'm really pleased with how Jay wrestled yesterday and today," said third year head coach Teague Moore. "He wrestled against some of the best in the country and showed he belongs. His win over #2 ranked Charlie Falck of Iowa was a big one and should give him a lot of confidence the remainder of the season." In the win over Falck, Ivanco was trailing 4-2 in the first period when a shot by Ivanco and a near takdeown resulted in an ankle injury to Falck. The Hawkeye took injury time and then returned to action, with Ivanco getting a takedown to tie the bout 4-4. Ivanco was riding Falck when the default occurred prior to the end of the first period. He opened with an 8-0 major decision over Wes Fike (Indiana). He followed that with a 3-2 decision over Kyle Gilchrist of Columbia. Ivanco has a season record now of 10-6. Clarion's other entry, junior Hadley Harrison (Jr. McKean/General McLane) at 157-pounds, posted a 2-2 record on Monday before being eliminated. Harrison was seeded 7th at 157 but lost his opening bout in the final seconds to Tyson Reiner of Northern Iowa. In the wrestle backs he pinned Harrison Krebs of Illinois State at 3:49, and notched a major decision over Chris Kelly of the Wildcat Wrestling Club. He then lost to Nate Carr Jr. 8-5 to finish the tournament. Harrison is now 10-5 on the season. After wrestling at the Midlands, Clarion will return to action on January 9-10 at the Virginia Duals. CLARION NOTES: Ivanco's win over Falck was his biggest in a Clarion singlet... Falck is ranked #2 in the nation by AWN and Intermat... Clarion finished with 17 points and in 27th place out of 48 teams with only 2 wrestlers participating. **Ivanco won the PSAC Championship this season with a win over Fluke (Edinboro) who finished today as the runner-up at the Southern Scuffle.

  10. CLARION WRESTLERS OPEN FRIDAY NIGHT Blue-Gold Starts at 6PM Nov. 13, 2008 Fans of Clarion University Wrestling can get a sneak preview of the 2008-2009 season on Friday, November 14th, when the Golden Eagles feature their "Blue-Gold" matches to start the year. Bouts begin at 6pm at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. Approximately 29 matches have been set up with members on this year's team roster, with each wrestler participating in at least two bouts. Two mats will be used until the bouts are completed. The feature match of the night - which will also be the final bout - will be 2008 NCAA Division I Qualifier Hadley Harrison (Jr. McKean) against last year's freshman sensation Travis Uncapher (So. Grapeville). "We're excited about getting the season underway," said third year Clarion head coach Teague Moore. "I believe we're ready to take another step forward in 2009. We have wrestlers with great character, an unbelievable work ethic and our team chemistry is really strong. I believe we'll have a more competitive lineup, top to bottom, than we had a year ago." Last year's Golden Eagles were 10-15-1 overall, placed third in the PSAC Championships and sixth at EWL's, all improvements over the 2007 season. Moore has a two-year record of 17-28-1, and has really advanced the program after taking over a team that went 0-17 in 2006. Starters back this year include Jay Ivanco (So. Monroeville) at 125, Sal Lascari (Sr. Gray) at 141, Greg Lewis (Jr. New Providence) at 149, Hadley Harrison (Jr. McKean) at 157, Travis Uncapher (So. Grapeville) at 157, Dominic Ross (Sr. Sharon) at 165, Mario Morelli (Jr. DuBois) at 174, Scott Joseph (Jr. Export) at 184, Jamie Luckett (Sr. St. Charles, Mo.) at 197 and Roman Husam (So. Lewisburg) at heavyweight. Ivanco was 27-13 a year ago at 125 and placed third at EWL's. while Lascari, a PSAC runner-up, had a solid season with an overall record of 16-12. Lewis, who wrestled two seasons at 141, red-shirted last season and is moving up to 149. He was 14-13 in 2007 placing third at PSAC's and has a career mark of 29-27. Harrison, the team's "Wrestler of the Year" in 2008, qualified for D-I Nationals at 149 and put together a record of 23-12 placing 4th at EWL's and third at PSAC's. He is moving up to 157. Ross was 5-6 last year, Morelli was sixth at EWL's and finished 15-19 overall, while Joseph was 12-21 overall and also placed 6th at EWL's. Luckett was a mid-year addition and added strength to 197 with an 11-7 overall record and a fourth place finish at EWL's. Husam, a freshman a year ago, was 8-22 but also finished strong and placed 6th at EWL's. Travis Uncapher, an outstanding freshman at 157 last year, was 22-11 overall and fifth at EWL's. He may red-shirt this season. Looking to battle for time this season will likely be red-shirt freshman Cameron Moran (Kane) at 133, Clint Podish (Fr. Sycamore) at 184, Dixon Jordan (Jr. Cheverly, Md.) at 197 and Quintas McCorkle (Fr. Alexandria, Va.) at heavyweight. Clarion's team has a total of 29 wrestlers on the roster, including 17 new faces. CLARION NOTES: Former Clarion Area heavyweight Anthony Driscoll is on the roster and will participate in the Blue Gold... The Golden Eagles open their new season in only one week, as Clarion hosts Eastern Michigan on Friday, November 21st at 7pm... New team posters will be available upon request on Friday night ... Five wrestlers are featured on the 209 poster including Uncapher, Harrison, Ivanco, Sal Lascari and Luckett... "Fly Eagles Fly".
  11. A lot of new faces to the Clarion this year; in addition to, a lot of guys changing weight classes. National Qualifier Hadley Harrison moves from 149 to 157 where he will join Travis Uncapher who was the 157 selection for the NCAA All-Rookie team last year as a true freshman. Uncapher is rumored to be red-shirting this season to better prepare for his run at a national chapionship. At 133 Clarion picked up a transfer from Arizona State in Danny Galvan with Cameron Moran growing from 125 to 133. Greg Lewis comes off of a redshirt season, after having two good years as an underclassmen, but it is unknown where he will wrestle (141 or 149.) Scott Joseph, who had an impressive season last year, has dropped a weight class from 184 to 174 where he will join last year's starter Mario Morelli. (I would think that one of them will use the year as a redshirt.) In what may be the most shocking move: Jamie Luckett who dominated the NJCAA at 197 and was ranked in the Atlantic Region Rankings last year after transfering in for the spring semester will drop from 197 to 184.
