    Just a few observations

I would like to start by saying I feel sorry for Nick Smart (113), Sam Griffith (126), Cristian Sales (138), and Mason Ray (145). Each is in a 4 man pod where the other 3 are in Rangers Top 11. Good luck to you guys. If Ranks were to hold (and we know they don't) the toughest competition that Garth Yenter has to get to the finals is the kid that finished 4th in his own region. Congratulations to Keegan Duncan for winning his region. As a gift you get the 7th ranked kid. Both 170 and 182 have the top 3 ranked kids on the same side (LaRue has a kid in both). For Canter, Maupin, Ray, or Gnadinger to win they could very well have to face 3 top 5 kids. There are 5 first round matchups between top 10 ranked kids. There are 3 first round matchups between kids in the top 4 teams although I only think one has the potential to be close (Blackwell/Mouser, West/Fausz, Strickrod/Morris) Again for the sake of a starting point if ranks were to hold the team score without bonus points would be LaRue 144, Campbell 134, Union 126, and Trinity 115. Obviously Bonus points will play a big factor like they always do but as mentioned on other posts a potential Newberry/Myers match could be a much bigger match than just an individual one. Good luck

    St Paris Graham

I know very little about the Graham program other than they are very good; however, I am willing to bet money that they don't do any recruiting. People move to the area so their son can wrestle for that program because it gives them a better chance in life. Although there are people that have done very well with just a high school education the norm is people with higher education do better. At Graham kids get to work with other outstanding kids every day in practice and the best way to get better is to wrestle/drill with people better than you. The other benefit Graham has to offer is the exposure. I would find it hard to believe that there is any DI program out there that doesn't take an opportunity to watch Graham and Blair and other teams like that every year. This is not to say that other kids don't get scholarships but the more exposure you get the better chance you have to get one. I find it hard to blame a program for being a "collection team" that kids and families gravitate too, again assuming that there is no recruiting going on.
  3. If Ranger's rankings were perfect then we wouldn't need to have the season. The kids could actually go out and enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner this year. Think of all the extra excuses they would all have to come up with to not do their homework. There is no way that any rankings for any activity can be perfect. What I do know is that when I moved to Kentucky I was informed of two ranking systems for Kentucky Wrestling however 95% of all discussion on rankings on this site and in face to face conversations are based on Ranger's rankings. I think it is obvious then that almost everybody believes that he has the most accurate rankings. Even if they are terrible they are the best until somebody comes along and does a better job. What I really find amusing is that some of the adults on this website are acting with the same maturity level as some of the kids. Like it or not several of us are role models and we all need to be aware of that before we hit post. Oh and before anybody has the chance to post I know I am not perfect either. Ranger - I think you do a great job and I am looking forward to taking your rankings to develop hypothetical duel meet results, as I did last year, but please don't let people drag you down to their level.
  4. The best wrestler, best individual, best team does not always win. When it comes to any championship event all that matters is who is best that day or that weekend. Good, bad, or the worst wrestler in KY history it doesn't matter Choate was the best that weekend and rightfully deserves the title of State Champion. Also for all of you throwing out facts please make sure to include all the facts not just the ones that support your argument. Webb did tech Choate but it was just after Choate returned from an injury. Yes Webb got teched by Isaacs but he also came back to beat him in a close match at Regions before losing a close match 9-5 in the state semifinals.

Is this something a coach should say?

Even kids that have the abilities to be professional athletes should be going through school trying to set themselves up for a career in something other than sports. It is unfortunate but I know there are lots of cases out there where kids with the potential have had career ending injuries and if they didn't pay attention in school they could be in trouble.

    Olympics: the dumbest question ever

I never liked to lose myself although I was never lucky enough to be in the state finals. I just think there is something to be said in calling yourself an Olympic medalist. More people win the lottery in this country than win Olympic medals. Look at Dara Torres. She lost by .01 seconds and she has stated that she was disappointed that she lost but happy that at the age of 41 she was able to beat kids half her age and winning the silver medal. If the Rulon Gardner would have lost his gold medal match do you not think that after the initial dissapointment went away that he wouldn't have been proud of beating everybody in the world at his weight except the person that hadn't lost in several years? I am not saying that you should ever want to lose but I would rather say I was an Olympic medalist than an Olympian. For that matter I would rather say I was a state runner up than a state qualifier.

    Olympics: the dumbest question ever

There is a major difference between the two cases. Johnson won a medal and Chun didn't. I think most of us would be dissapointed to lose the gold medal match but at the same time be happy with the silver medal.

    Olympics

The Spencer Mango matches were on at about 6:30am EST on MSNBC. Wouldn't be supprised if tomorrows USA matches are shown at the same time tomorrow.

    what hurt the most

I think it might be time to start a random drug testing program.
  10. I believe they decided to adapt this rule simply because that is the NCAA rule.
  11. In my opinion, unless you watched and remember the match, a pin is the result least likely to change the standings. A pin might mean that you dominated your opponent but it also might mean you were losing 13-2 and caught them in a move and in rare cases he might have pinned himself. Winning by points, especially if it

Sullivan also cost himself with the cautions.
